My pros & cons
I give the phone 7.8 out of 10 My 1st impressions from the first six days of using the phone. I still have a lot more to test i.e. Fingerprint security, New third party applications that are pre loaded (i.e. non Microsoft). I was disappoited at first but i'm glad now that i bought this phone. So far. I am hoping Toshiba will provide fixes for most of the problems I have listed below under CONS... Mainly USBHOST LOW BATTERY error message. so that a phone reset automatically resets the required REGISTRY KEY to clear this error. CONS... ======== The phone turns off / shutdown while the battery indicator is still showing 10% life remaining. Unable to configure LOW BATTERY warnings % level. No visible bluetooth (blue light or Bluetooth symbol on screen) indicator is a headache. Microsoft Voice (Voice Commands) missing. Call sound is terrible sometimes as it picks up the minutest sound and amplifies back through the ear peice. Phone freezing (the more i've used the phone the less it seems to happen after switching off ERROR REPORTING & reducing the frequency that WINDOWS LIVE updates). I have used this phone very very intensively for the last 6 days. Phone has been fine since. Seem poor at picking up 3G reception compared to my HTC mteor when i use the same SIM card from the location. No case for a £380 phone :-( No local repair drop-in centers (i.e. Carphone Warehouse etc...) from what can gather. Customer/Technical Support for UK Toshiba say they haven't had the to play arond with or seen the phone. I felt like i was being fobbed of. Used a normal USB pen drive & that worked brilliantly. Then later i tried a passive pockect (19-in-1) USB card reader & got the message USBHOST LOW BATTERY error, which repeatedly popped up on the screen & took many taps to clear it. Thanks to another members post in this forum that explained a fix. I was able to reset the correct regisry key. Voicemail symbol is constantly shown in the top notification bar. Whether voicemail box has messages or it is an empty voicemail box. I found my checking for mail when there was no mail present. Tomtom6 doesn't seem to install properly. Some customization menus seem more ristrictive .i.e. adding ringtones (needs acticesync), alarm clock (sound bites) etc... not sure if that is a WM6 Pro thing or a Toshiba thing. phone can't keep up with semi fast typing, sometimes slow typing & no matter how firmly & accurately keys are pressed. even after stopping windows live & error reporting & as many apps as possible. MS Excel. The first character that you try to enter into any cell dosn't register in the cell until after about the third attempt. Is anyone else having this problem ? Battery seems to take forever to charge. Well over 2 hours :-( *** Ran out of SPACE ***

Good analysis, I support your view that now that I have been using it for 2 weeks it is much more stable, the problems are that Toshiba seem to have gone away from a standard WinMo installation but have not provided adequate alternatives. It also feels that we are testing some of the s/w that should have been internally tested. I tried to post my issues here but they were truncated (so many ...) !

Arniea: I also see the behaviour with Excel to which you refer. When you select a cell in Excel the first character you type is lost, it seems to be consumed when the cell editor gets focus. If you use the direction keys to navigate around the spreadsheet you can lose two characters when you enter data! This is definitely not standard Excel behaviour either on Windows XP or WM3. Although it sounds minor it makes data entry into Excel very irritating. Best Regards, Jan. |
I can't see this Excel problem not matter what I do. What form of input are you using? |
Hi Respondents, Thanks for all your replies & confirmations. My opinion & tolerance level has changed today. After stopping "error reporting" & slowing the frequency of "windows Live/push mail". I have gone from mildly frustrated to very angry at the fact i feel like i have Jack Ass stamped on my head. I belief that this product is not of merchantable quality & all handsets should be recalled (refunded). Every night (between 2am - 4am) i turn off my phone and charge it (+ solar GPS receiver) to reduce the time it takes to charge, (I generally wake up at 8am even if i don't get up) anyway I disconnected the charger switched on my phone and didn't touch it or start any apps. Then 2 hours later i went back to my phone & it was frozen. I hit the reset button. This happened a further 3 more times in the next 4 hours. Then the unthinkable happened. The phone froze to such an extent that the power button wouldn't turn the screen on, nor would sliding the keyboard out. But then I hit the reset button. Nothing happened & I thought i must of missed the button. I press the rest button a further 2 times & still nothing. I had to remove the battery. I've had the phone since about 8th July 2007 & there is just to many things wrong with this phone. It just gives me grave concerns as to whether this phone will last up to 6 months with constant forced cold re-starts (Battery removal EQUAL TO switching off a PC without shutting down) This seems a very poor quality product, not something i would expect from the large brand like Toshiba. Is this E-Ten phone re-branded as Toshiba. The E-Ten phones also had the same sound problems as reported by G900 customers. Microphone noise amplified thru the ear peice. I want my money back :-( |
Bang... Mine just crashed again (3 times today, hardly any use at all. Holding on for the patch, but if that don't work first time, its money back for me. V. disappointed. |
Actually I had a similar input problem with the subject line in e-mails and other input entry boxes. I also had a problem with the X9 onscreen keyboard which wasn’t working from the start. Then after a reset to factory settings it started working until the “sleep of death” thing started appearing again, then the X9 keyboard was unusable. I will be very impressed if Toshiba can fix this phone with a simple ROM patch. In fact, I will buy this phone again if that is the case. My bet in the meantime: I am looking at the UBiQUiO 503G as a promising replacement. I know it doesn’t have the same screen size & res, but hey, if that phone is working it will do for me.
(Obviously I do hope that the 503G won’t have the same teething problems the 501 had) |
Arniea, you forgot two other major bugs (at least for a PDA):- 1. No sync with Outlook Notes 2. No two way sync of Files and Favourites. I note the announcement regarding Friday's firmware release states that it is specific to the lockup problem and makes no mention of the other issues. Doesn't sound encouraging to me. I urge anyone who isn't 100% happy with the device after Friday to return it for a full refund within Expansys' very generous extended return policy. Toshiba shouldn't be allowed to get away with releasing such shoddy and untested goods, and once the return period is up, you could be stuck with a real lemon (anyone remember Toshiba's support history with the crash-happy e series PPCs?). Sure, you could enter an extended argument over SoGA etc., but why should you have that hassle?

Hello I don't know where do i have to place a song, that will appear at the alarms sound list, because i would like to change to one of my songs, but i couldn't find it. Could you help me, telling the correct folder where i have to place the song, or how to resolve it. Thank you D.H.Andras |
